The characteristics of sleep changing with different environments still exist in the human evolution process. The brain activities and arousal appear more frequently during the first night sleep in a strange place, which is regarded as first night effect (FNE). The diagnosis of sleep disorders usually relies on single-night monitoring according to current guidelines, but the results of sleep evaluation are often affected by FNE. Therefore, the accuracy of traditional methods gets impact, while multi-night sleep monitoring has arisen more attention. Based on the introduction of FNE, this paper not only elaborates the manifestations and effects of FNE on different populations and sleep-related diseases, but also analyzes the feasibility and necessity of multi-night sleep monitoring to provide an optimized monitoring scheme for the diseases.
